Digital Wine Journey: Japan meets Wines of Germany

21.06.2022

With a virtual visit to Germany, the German Wine Institute (DWI) enabled Japanese sommeliers, experts and consumers to enjoy an informative live web tasting. Over 500 Zoom-participants took part in the event in June 2022.

The reknowned sommeliers Marc Almert (Baur au Lac, Zurich) and Watura Iwata (Hotel 'The Thousand', Kyoto) as well as the Japanese cellar master Chi Sakata located in the Bernhard Koch winery (Hainfeld, Pfalz region) moderated the program.

Japan: Great interest in Sekt, Riesling und Pinot Noir

The participants of the 'Digital Wine Journey' experienced Sekt (sparkling wine), a red and a white wine from German origin; all products showcased are readily available in Japan. Based on these three fine wines, the moderators described aromas of Riesling, Pinot Noir and sparkling wine styles. The sommeliers Iwata-San and Marc Almert also explained numerous suitable combinations of Japanese cuisine and wines from the 13 German wine-growing regions. Cellar master Chi Sakata (Weingut Koch) then presented a Pinot Noir from the Palatinate region and stressed particularities of the entire Pfalz region.

Media-Cooperation with GNTB German National Tourist Board

The live stream was advertised, among other things, through a cooperation with the GNTB (German National Tourist Board) and the effective use of social media channels (GNTB).
