Best German wines in Switzerland
The "VINUM International Wine Competition - Best of Germany" took place over two days in mid-June in cooperation with the German Wine Institute (DWI).
Sekthaus Raumland shone in first place with its Chardonnay Réserve Brut 2012 which won Best in Show – Wine with 95 points. The 15-member jury awarded a total of 45 wines in eight main categories and four special categories from the 460 wines tasted. The 45 participating wine merchants submitted 337 white, 88 red and 32 sparkling wines as well as 3 rosés for the competition held in the Zurich premises of the Intervinum publishing house.
The eight main categories comprised of Riesling wines: dry, feinherb / semi-dry / fruity, noble sweet; white Pinot varieties (dry); other white wines (dry); Pinot Noir (dry); other red wines (dry) and finally German sparkling wine. The Birkweiler Kastanienbusch Riesling VDP. Grosses Gewächs 2019 from Weingut Ökonomierat Rebholz in the Pfalz was awarded the best Riesling as well as the special Best of Bio prize.
With the tasting it became clear that German wine in Switzerland is almost exclusively a genre for the specialist trade, where Riesling and Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) lovers are well catered for and on particularly good terms. "The Swiss consumer is demanding and quality-conscious," noted DWI managing director Monika Reule, "and German wine offers them a very good price-performance ratio."
The Best of Germany tasting also acknowledges the increase in the importance of the Swiss market for German wineries. Since 2010, the value and volume of exports to the Alpine country has doubled. Switzerland now ranks 9th among the most important wine exporting countries for German wine.
