Riesling – the “coolest” white grape variety of the world – guarantees top mentions from the wine world: perfect score of 100 points from the American magazine Wine Spectator, prize for the best foreign wine by French wine critics, the German Wine Institute reports on a 18 percent increase in wine exports for the year 2006. Riesling is literally the talk of the town! Even self-critical German and Austrian wine enthusiasts are increasingly rediscovering a liking for their native growths, which – unlike many overpriced premium wines from other countries – have credibility, not least because they offer excellent value for money.

Hallwag’s recently published book Riesling – the full diversity of the world’s noblest vine offers a comprehensive overview of the grape, its quality, the classifications, the aromas and the various types of Riesling wines. Written by Christina Fischer and Ingo Swoboda, their homage to the queen of white wines is special in that they introduce the reader to Riesling primarily by describing its characteristics rather than emphasizing its origin.

The authors have organized various expressions of Riesling into “categories” that range from “sound basis” to “delicate finesse,” “fruity diversity,” “complex elegance,” “baroque monuments” and “noble sweetness” – an approach that provides the prospective wine taster with an outstanding leitmotif that underscores the many facets of this grape. The same categories are also the framework within which numerous top winemakers are portrayed. The portraits not only impart fascinating insights into highly individual philosophies, but also can serve as a point of reference for purchasing and enjoying Riesling wines. Veteran “wine photographer” Robert Dieth is responsible for the expressive black-and-white photos of the winemakers, as well as for most of the full-color shots of grapes and landscapes throughout the book.

The origin of the grape, what takes place in the vineyard and in the cellar, and résumés of the regions in which it is cultivated are subjects covered in the first two chapters of the book. Guidelines on food and wine affinities, practical tips, names and contact data of Riesling producers worldwide, and a concise glossary round out this work devoted to Riesling. In all, the authors’ vibrant approach and straightforward language make for an informative and enjoyable read.
