Prior to the election of the 62. German Wine Queen, the German Wine Institute (Deutsches Weininstitut, DWI) invited the candidates from all 13 German wine-growing regions to a three-day preparation seminar in Neustadt an der Weinstrasse.

The European Union and "Wines of Germany" presented top European Rieslings at the "Destination Riesling" booths at the 28th�annual Food & WineClassic in Aspen, Colorado from June 18-20. No fewer than 606 times were German wines of the 2008 vintage awarded 90+ points in Robert Parker’s current vintage appraisal in his newsletter Wine Advocate. A 2008 Scharzhofberger Riesling Auslese Goldkapsel from Weingut Egon M�ller-Scharzhof (Saar Valley of the Mosel region) even fetched 98 of a possible 100 points, possibly elevating it to cult status.

The Federal Ministry of Agriculture (BMELV) once again organizes and finances Germany's joint stand at Vinexpo in Hong Kong where wines from more than 60 German wine makers will be offered. The German Wine Institute offers a diversified programme between May 25th and 27th at the German pavilion.

"Goldrush" for Germany's white wines

German wine producers emerged as one of the big winners in this year's International Wine & Spirits Competition as the Northern Hemisphere results were announced today at the London International Wine Fair. German wines won a total of 21 gold medals in this year's Competition, with 18 receiving the top honour of Gold (Best in Class), up from a total of 12 gold medals in 2009.

The San Francisco tasting was held at the Westin St. Francis on May 11th and featured 28 tables of German wines, representing over 40 German producers. On May 13th, the tour continued in New York City with 47 tables of German wines, representing over 50 German producers. The large walk-around tasting in San Francisco was very well received by over 180 trade and media guests.

London: more space for Riesling & Co

Wines of Germany is returning to the London International Wine Fair (LIWF), in conjunction with the Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection, with a bigger and better stand than ever before. The Riesling & Co Room, which boasts a 60% increase in size, will be located in the new central stand space L20.

German wine exporters were also affected by the worldwide economic crisis in 2009, although the impact was less severe than anticipated. According to data issued by the German Wine Institute/Mainz, both volume and value of exports declined in 2009 by six and eight percent, respectively.

For the most part, the global economic crisis had little impact on the German wine market in 2009. Based on surveys by the Association for Consumer Research (GfK) of all distribution channels, e.g. the grocery sector, discounters, specialty trade and producers (direct sales), the German Wine Institute/Mainz reports a 1.2% increase in the value of wine sales in the domestic market in 2009.

Sonja Christ, a 25-year-old MBA graduate and wine-grower's daughter from Oberfell (between Koblenz and Cochem on the Mosel), took top place in an exciting finale with five competitors in the election of the German Wine Queen in 2009. The petite blond from the Mosel, who is currently responsible for the organization and logistics of wine reviews for a German wine magazine, is extremely wine knowledgeable, articulate, and charming in manner. She will be the ambassador of German wine-growers and their products in the course of some 250 appearances in Germany and abroad during the coming year.
